Cell Structures
For several years in the early 2000’s, my father waged war against cancers that invaded his body, and which eventually took his life in the summer of 2007. Over the years of struggle, I tried to come to terms with this predator. I looked at cancer cells through a microscope and sought to find something positive within their forms. This examination, both content and the method for discovery has been an important part of my practice ever since. I have shifted from cancer cells to plants, insects, and natural objects as my resource material, but the process remains, abstracting the visual information garnered through close investigation at a microscopic level. While looking into the layers beneath the surface is interesting, examining things at a microscopic level is compelling. I use gouache, oils and most recently, ceramics to illustrate my findings.
